The Child Language Laboratory at New York University, directed by Dr. Ailís Cournane, invites applications for a one-year full-time lab manager position, starting Sept 1, 2018. Our lab focuses on semantic and syntactic development in typically developing children. We use a variety of corpus and experimental methods both in the lab and at local daycares. Under supervision of Dr. Cournane, the lab manager’s tasks will include aiding with the development of research, administration and project management, and recruiting and running participants. The weighting of tasks is subject to expertise and to lab needs. This position is an excellent opportunity for an interested and committed individual to get guidance and experience with lab-based cognitive science research.
Requirements for the position include a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (Linguistics, Cognitive Science, Communication Disorders, Psychology, Computer Science, or similar) in hand by start date. The candidate must have excellent interpersonal, organizational, and computer skills and be a proactive and engaged learner with a professional and developed work ethic.
The ideal candidate has basic (or better) computer programming and statistical skills (R), has experience working with toddlers and preschool aged children, is proactive and comfortable interacting with families, teachers, and preschool directors, and has advanced undergraduate cognitive development, syntax and/or semantics background. Valuable skills and experiences include: prior research experience (especially with eye-tracking and/or behavioural tasks), training in linguistic theory, and experience with science outreach and public engagement.

The Department of Modern Languages at Ohio University seeks a colleague to create and teach online courses in foreign languages; lead others in developing online courses; and help incorporate appropriate technologies into the full spectrum of classroom-based teaching. The position is a renewable, non-tenure track teaching position. The ideal candidate will have experience in designing and teaching online language courses, be committed to working effectively with students, faculty and staff from diverse backgrounds and will have creative ideas for curricular development. Start date: January 1, 2018 or August 16, 2018 dependent upon availability of candidate.
Responsibilities include:
* Work with Ohio University Instructional Designers and the coordinators of each language to develop online course curricula and materials for elementary and intermediate language programs. (Courses are offered in French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish)
* Prepare faculty to teach online courses.
* Work closely with language program coordinators and their faculty to promote the effective use of instructional technologies.
* Create and teach courses about Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL courses).
Minimum qualifications:
* MA in French or Spanish
* Demonstrated experience in designing online foreign language courses
* Demonstrated excellence in undergraduate online foreign language teaching
Preference will be given to candidates with a Ph.D. or equivalent degree; a portfolio demonstrating excellence as a designer of online language courses and as a teacher; commitment to Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL); native or native-like fluency in English; advanced proficiency in French and/or Spanish; and the desire and ability to serve as a leader in curricular change.

Due to expansion, Nazarbayev University Graduate School of Education (NUGSE) is recruiting Academic English Instructors. Positions are available from January 8, 2018.

 

NUGSE began providing its first Master’s level programs in September 2013, supported by its strategic partners, the University of Cambridge Faculty of Education and the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education. NUGSE currently offers an MSc in Educational Leadership, an MA in Multilingual Education, and a PhD program. The MSc in Educational Leadership offers specializations in School Education, Inclusive Education and Higher Education.

During its first three years, NUGSE has developed an innovative, embedded approach to Academic English for our postgraduate research students in two dimensions: scheduled for-credit Academic English courses working in direct support of student program learning; and our Writing Center, providing both online and in-person support for academic writing.

Qualified educators interested in working with highly motivated and accomplished students in an innovative, collaborative, research-oriented environment are strongly encouraged to apply. Responsibilities of the Academic English Instructor position include:

  • design and teach Academic English courses appropriate for postgraduate research students;

  • teach in Electronic Learning Environments and conventional face-to-face contexts;

  • provide consultations, tutoring and other writing support activities (Writing Center);

  • collaborate with other NUGSE faculty to align work with students’ course and program learning needs;

  • plan and implement NUGSE professional development activities;

  • participate in committees/general meetings at School and University levels;

Selection criteria:

  • Master’s or Ph.D. degree in TESOL (or related field);

  • Relevant experience working with university students (postgraduate research students preferred);

  • Relevant experience in the field of Academic English/Academic Literacies;

  • Capacity for working in an online context (synchronous and asynchronous).

Conditions of Employment:

The appointment is a 3-years renewable contract subject to annual performance reviews. An attractive remuneration package for international faculty members includes:

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

Assist with tasks related to test development, test rating, and research for tests of English proficiency.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist with the compilation of scorer training materials. 
  • Assist with development of item writing and review procedures and processes. 
  • Coordinate recruiting and hiring of consultants to serve as item writers and item reviewers.
  • Contribute to development and delivery of item writer and reviewer training. 
  • Maintain correspondence with item writers and reviewers to answer questions and enforce deadlines.
  • Track work completed by item writers and reviewers, and perform quality control checks.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:
Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) in a relevant field and three (3) years of related experience; or Master’s degree (MA/MS) degree in a relevant field.

Experience:
Successful candidate will have experience working with test development and item writing and/or K-12 education.

Desired Skills
The preferred candidate will be a motivated self-starter with the ability to work flexibly and cooperatively in a fast paced team environment. Excellent skills in the following areas are highly desirable: native or native-like proficiency in English; proficiency in the use of Excel, Word, and PowerPoint; thoroughness in execution of task assignments; and excellent time management and adherence to deadlines.
