The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) seeks highly qualified applicants for our Ph.D. program in Hispanic Languages and Literatures. The Spanish and Portuguese Linguistics Track includes four faculty members with diverse interests that span child language acquisition, bilingualism, heritage language acquisition, theoretical syntax and phonology, laboratory phonology, field methods, language reclamation, and historical linguistics.
Our concentration consists of the following members (all accepting new students for Fall 2024):
Dr. Victoria Mateu (vmateu@humnet.ucla.edu) studies child language development with a specialization in morphology and syntax. She is particularly interested in children’s acquisition of the argument structure of verbs, what causes difficulties in their comprehension of constructions that involve non-local dependencies (e.g., passives, questions, relative clauses), and the insights that child data can provide on adult grammars. She also has experience investigating infants’ word and morphological segmentation abilities, as well as adult monolingual, bilingual, and L2 speakers’ Romance (Spanish, Catalan, French) grammars.
Dr. Ji Young Kim (jiyoungkim@ucla.edu) studies bilingual phonetics and phonology, specifically the sound systems of Spanish heritage speakers in the U.S. The overarching goal of her research is to elucidate the source(s) of divergent phonetic and/or phonological features in heritage Spanish, when compared with non-heritage varieties, and examine its linguistic status.
Dr. Carlos Quícoli (quicoli@humnet.ucla.edu) studies syntactic theory; comparative syntax of Romance languages with focus on Portuguese syntax and Spanish syntax. He also studies Portuguese phonology and the historical development of Spanish and Portuguese from its Latin origins. Dr. Quicoli is particularly interested in the potential manifestations of general principles of language (principles of Universal Grammar) in Romance languages.
Dr. Rodrigo Ranero (ranero@ucla.edu) studies syntax and phonology, with an empirical focus on the Mayan languages (Kaqchikel, K’iche’, Tz’utujil, Chuj) and Spanish. His topics of interest include ellipsis, agreement, A’-movement, and harmony processes. He is also actively involved in language reclamation efforts underway in Guatemala for the Xinka language. He is particularly interested in advising students on projects related to linguistic contact between indigenous languages of the Americas and Spanish.
Our Ph.D. program provides state-of-the-art training in experimental approaches to theoretical and applied linguistics. Students are encouraged to work with more than one faculty member and are actively involved in faculty-student and student-student collaborative projects.
Our program also allows the flexibility of taking classes in other departments, such as Linguistics, Anthropology, and Sociology, and collaborating with graduate students and faculty members in those departments.
All Ph.D. students are fully funded with teaching assistantships, research assistantships, and/or fellowships. UCLA is located in Southern California which is linguistically and culturally rich, environmentally diverse, and a sunny place to live in. Los Angeles has the largest Spanish-speaking population in the U.S., offering an ideal testing ground for research in Spanish linguistics, bi/multilingualism, and language contact.
Admission requirements:
· Statement of purpose
· 3 letters of recommendation
· Transcripts
· Writing sample
· Fellowship application (optional: select any that you might be eligible for beyond your basic support package)
· TOEFL/IELTS scores (for international students whose first language is not English or who did not receive their Bachelor’s Degree in an Anglophone country)
· GRE scores (optional)
Additional information about the program can be found here. Applications must be submitted by December 31st, 2023. Interested candidates are encouraged to contact individual faculty members for any inquiries about our graduate program.
Warm regards,
Victoria Mateu, Ph.D.
