A PhD studentship at the University of Manchester

A PhD studentship to discover drivers of child language development from multimodal transcripts of early child-parent and child-educator interactions:

Description: The University of Marburg, founded in 1527, offers a variety of excellent programs of study for around 22,000 students and confronts the important topics of our time through excellent research across a broad spectrum of sciences.

The department of German Studies and Arts, Institute for German Linguistics & Research Center »Deutscher Sprachatlas«, is currently accepting applications for a Research Assistant (Doctoral Researcher/PhD)

The position is offered for a period of 3 years, if no former times of qualification are to be considered. The starting date is 01.03.2025. The position is part-time (65% of regular working hours) with salary and benefits commensurate with a public service position in the state Hesse, Germany (TV-H E 13, 65%). 

The position is available within the Research Training Group “Dynamics and stability of linguistic representations“ (RTG 2700). The RTG is a structured program for Ph.D.-students and young researchers. The scientific goal of the group is to study the mental bases of linguistic units, their usage, acquisition, development and change. To this end, several methodological perspectives are taken, e.g. from Psycho- or Neurolinguistics, Dialectology, Clinical Linguistics, Historical Linguistics and Pragmatics. We are looking for  a motivated and excellent student who is willing to integrate his or her research proposals into Project A2 of the RTG. Tasks:

– include scientific services in research
- realization of a Ph.D.-project within the time of the position
- participation in preparing and actively attending all events of the RTG

The position is limited to a time period deemed adequate for the completion of a doctoral degree. As part of the assigned duties, there will be ample opportunity to conduct the independent scientific research necessary for the completion of a doctorate. The limitation complies to § 2, 1 WissZeitVG.

Profile:

– MSc-degree or equivalent in Linguistics, Phonetics, Psychology or closely related disciplines with a discernible linguistic component
- expertise with empirical linguistic data, independent and thorough scientific way of working, confidence in preparing scientific texts and presentations, and knowledge of statistics
- good language skills (written and spoken) in German and English (comparable to level “B” of the European reference frame)
- further language skills are advantageous
- social competence, willingness for cooperation, high motivation and high levels of resilience

Disposition to own scientific qualification is expected.

We actively support the professional development of junior researchers by the offers of Marburg Research Academy (MARA), the International Office and the Higher Education Didactics Office.

We offer:

– intensive supervision of the doctoral project by two supervisors- training in social, methodological and scientific skills through workshops- introduction to the academic community through guest lectures and colloquia- use of the Institute’s own laboratories for EEG, eye tracking and behavioural studies- access to speech corpora of the research center »Deutscher Sprachatlas«- ticket for free use of public transport in the state Hesse, Germany

The Department of Psycholinguistics and Didactics of the German LanguageFaculty of Modern Languages, at Goethe University Frankfurt invites applications for a position as 

 Doctoral researcher (m/f/d) (E13 TV-G-U, 65 % part-time) 

 to be filled by 01.04.2024 within the project “Comprehension of Negation in Child and Adult Speakers of Spanish and German (NegPos)”. The project is part of the CRC 1629 “Negation in Language and Beyond (NegLaB)” funded by the German Science Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG). The position will be a part-time position limited until 31.12.2027. The salary grade is based on the job characteristics of the collective agreement (TV-G-U) applicable to Goethe University.

 Expectations and tasks:

The successful candidate is expected to work collaboratively in the project and to actively participate in the courses, workshops, and events offered by the CRC. We are looking for a highly qualified candidate, who will (a) develop language-acquisition experiments (offline and eye tracking) for German-speaking and Spanish-speaking children, analyze the data, and contribute to the dissemination of the experimental results.

 Requirements:Applicants should hold a MA in linguistics, or equivalent, with the degree completed by 31.03.2024 the latest. They should demonstrate prior experience with language acquisition research. Very good language skills in German and/or Spanish are required.
