The Department of Linguistics at the University of Kansas welcomes applications for our Ph.D. program and our terminal M.A. program, for Fall 2026. The KU Linguistics Department trains students in data-driven linguistic research, balancing experimental and fieldwork methodologies to make discoveries in phonetics, phonology, syntax, psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, first language acquisition, second language acquisition, semantics, sociolinguistics, and the study of languages indigenous to North America, Mesoamerica, and Africa. Our research is housed in one of six laboratories on campus, which are equipped with top-of-the-line equipment and workspaces. Our facilities also include an anechoic chamber for pristine phonetic recordings.
- Developmental Psycholinguistics Lab
- Field Linguistics Lab
- Neurolinguistics & Language Processing Lab
- Phonetics & Psycholinguistics Lab
- Second Language Acquisition Lab
- Sociolinguistics Lab
- Our Ph.D. candidates are fully funded for five years, usually through teaching and research assistantships. We also offer support for research and conference expenses. Funding may be available for terminal M.A. students. Our Ph.D. graduates have a high level of success after completion, with 94% finding employment upon graduation, 76% in academic positions, and 18% conducting research in industry or for non-profits. Questions can be addressed to our Director of Graduate Studies, Andrew McKenzie, or our Graduate Program Coordinator, Alec Graham. In addition, we will be hosting a virtual open house about our program. Join us to meet and engage with our faculty, and chat with current PhD students. The virtual open house will be organized around our research areas and will include time to meet with current graduate students. Details can be found on the attached flyer and at our website. Open House: Saturday Oct 18, 2025 11–4 CST.Click here to RSVP for a session, a zoom link and additional information will be shared to those who have signed up.
