2013 ETS Summer Institute:

English Language Learning Internships

The English Language Learning (ELL) group in the Assessment Development Division of Educational Testing Service (ETS) expects to hire approximately 47 interns for the summer of 2013.

POSITION DETAILS: ELL summer interns will participate in a six-week program that begins on Monday, July 8, and ends on Friday, August 16. Interns are expected to work 8:30–5:00, Monday through Friday, for the whole program, and will receive attractive compensation. All work is conducted at the ETS Rosedale campus in Princeton, New Jersey. Interns must arrange their own housing and transportation.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES & REQUIREMENTS: Interns will prepare test materials for the TOEFL iBT® test, the TOEIC® tests, or the K–12 English language learning assessments (K-12 ELL).

The TOEFL iBT test is taken by nonnative speakers of English planning to apply to an English-speaking college or university. The TOEIC tests are taken principally by people who need to communicate with both native and nonnative speakers of English in the context of the global workplace. The K–12 ELL assessments are taken by nonnative English language learners at all grade levels who are studying English as part of their school curriculum, by applicants to high schools where instruction takes place in English, and by high school students preparing for college entrance.

Test development work includes writing items that test knowledge of grammar, vocabulary, and reading comprehension; creating conversations and talks that test listening comprehension; and developing scenarios and prompts that allow candidates to demonstrate their writing and speaking skills. The work is intellectually challenging and rewarding.

All interns must have excellent writing skills. The work requires verbal precision and sensitivity to nuance, analytic skill, attention to detail, and receptiveness to instruction. Interns must have a very high degree of fluency in English but do not need to be native speakers, nor do they need to be U.S. citizens. Non-U.S. citizens must have appropriate work visas. The TOEFL iBT test, the TOEIC tests, and the K-12 ELL assessments are global measures, so ETS actively seeks candidates who can bring diverse experiences and perspectives to the work. The ELL summer internship workforce includes undergraduate students, graduate students, and teachers.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Interested candidates must submit a résumé AND complete a work sample for each test section for which they would like to be considered (i.e., TOEIC Reading, TOEFL iBT Speaking). Directions for completing and submitting the work samples will be posted under the Internships tab on the ETS Careers page at www.ets.org/careers beginning in February 2013. Applications are due Sunday, March 24.

For questions, please contact Elizabeth Jenner, ELL Summer Institute Coordinator, at ejenner@ets.org.
