Principal responsibilities:

1.       Conducts needs assessments across departments regarding language testing. Develops assessment platforms that are flexible and transportable across units. Initiates and sustains long-term discussions across the University as a means to ensure language testing remains state of the art.

2.       Builds consensus among faculty around the need to align internal measures of language proficiency with national proficiency standards in order to gain a more objective measure of progress.

3.       Collaborates with peer institutions regarding testing and assessment needs; develops partnerships to share expertise about assessment methodologies and technology solutions and develops collective assessment instruments and solutions.

4.       Develops competency standards that conform to national standards.

5.       Investigates new testing and assessment solutions. Negotiates and coordinates pilot testing. Assesses and reports on results of pilot tests.

6.       Maintains and improves current testing instruments to ensure that testing and assessments are effective and seamless parts of language learning. Oversees quality control of testing and assessment instruments.

7.       Ensures that testing solutions work within the guidelines of University policy.

8.       Remains current on the latest developments in testing and assessment hardware and software.

9.       May perform other duties as assigned.

Required education and experience:

Develop test items for a large-scale English language assessment for K-12 English language learners (ELLs), with a focus on test development for ELLs in kindergarten and 1st grade and transitioning from paper to computer-based testing.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Evaluate, review and write test materials and documents for kindergarten and 1st grade, including providing feedback to team members on test item development

Director, Writing and Communication Center, New Economic School (NES), Moscow, Russia

The NES Writing and Communication Center (WCC) seeks a Director who will also serve as a Lecturer in the English Department beginning Fall 2013. A successful candidate will coordinate NES’s bilingual writing tutoring program for undergraduate and graduate students, provide training for professional consultants, organize Writing across the Curriculum seminars and other events, oversee curriculum development for WCC workshops, handle budgeting and other administrative work, and design assessment tools for the WCC’s programs. The Director will also teach 1-2 English writing and/or literature courses per academic year.

This is an exciting opportunity for a senior writing/communications specialist who wishes to help build the first WCC of its kind in Russia.

Qualifications:

Master’s degree or a PhD in Composition and Rhetoric, English, TESOL or related field; profound knowledge of writing center theory and WAC/WID principles; 4+ years of experience in teaching or tutoring written and oral academic communication at the undergraduate and/or graduate level; extensive experience in curriculum development and assessment; commitment to student-centered pedagogy; excellent communication and organizational skills; the ability to work in a bilingual academic environment; familiarity with educational technology; experience in program assessment; and commitment to research. The knowledge of Russian is preferred but not required.

Salary: $57,700 – $72,000

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

Supervise and coordinate the work of a graphic design/production team that produces graphic-intense paper and computer-based language assessments for K-12.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordinate the transition of a paper-based to an interactive, multimedia delivered test
  • Ensure smooth communication and coordination between the production team and the test development and technology teams
  • Maintain and update regular work schedules and production timelines as well as plan for special projects or work with related teams
  • Conduct weekly production check-in meetings
  • Ensure adherence to production timelines and coordination with test development
  • Develop and monitor implementation of quality control procedures for graphics, layout, and design for test forms
  • Oversee production work involving task distribution, graphics ordering, layout, coloring, revisions, and communication with artists

Minimum Qualifications:

Education
BA/BS degree in related field or a minimum of eight years of equivalent education, and seven years of related experience, including supervisory experience are required.

Experience
Successful candidate will have experience supervising and coordinating a team of designers to produce paper and/or computer-based materials. He or she will have project and/or production coordination experience, facility with the technical aspects of graphics editing, layout, and design, as well as experience working on production during all phases of development from specifications and templates through final camera-ready versions.

Qualifications
The preferred candidate will be able to balance multiple tasks and schedules, motivated to be flexible and show leadership in order to attain team goals, and have the ability to work independently as well as cooperatively in a fast-paced team environment. The Intensive English Program, Department of Second Language Studies, at Indiana University announces a search for the Director of the Intensive English program (IEP). We are looking for director-candidates with previous experience as directors or assistant directors of university-based programs. Previous UCIEP and/or CEA affiliation is strongly preferred. Candidates are expected to hold a PhD in Second Language Studies, Applied Linguistics, TESOL, or Linguistics and should have a significant professional portfolio in the field in addition to administrative experience. Qualifications:

The IEPP has a 36-year history of providing rigorous ESL and academic preparation programs for individual students and customized groups.  It has deep faculty expertise, an excellent multimedia resource center and three computer labs, and excellent long-standing institutional relationships, primarily in Asia.  More than half of this vital program’s revenue comes from customized and extramural programs, which include teacher training, English for Science and Technology and community service learning in addition to English language instruction.  Our most recent set of programs are Business Certificates in Innovation and Sustainability.

The ESL, EAP and English for Specific Purposes (ESP) Instructor position is an academic position (UC-Extension teacher title) in the International English and Professional Programs unit reporting to the Academic Director of the IEPP.

Responsibilities:
Teach 20 contact hours per week each quarter term (year-round with four 10-week quarters) or equivalent. Teaching will include courses in our Intensive English (core and electives), Communication and Culture, English for Science and Technology programs, and/or custom programs for partner universities and organizations.  Supervise 2 hours per week in the Multimedia Resource Center.  Maintain office hours. Provide service to the unit through active participation in administrative and/or academic tasks or projects as assigned.  Assist with testing and placement of students. Participate on committee and academic projects including collaboration to develop English for Science and Technology curriculum, Business English curricula, TEFL, and accreditation projects. Release time for administration or academic projects may substitute for classroom teaching. Instructors are expected to remain current through reading and ongoing exchange of ideas with other language professionals.

About These Positions:
We are seeking four instructors with specific expertise and/or demonstrated excellence in teaching four sub-fields: (1) TEFL, (2) testing/assessment experience, (3)  EST, and (4) Business English.  Instructors with experience teaching science and technology content or business content to international students and/or ESL/EFL learners (reading, critical thinking, research, lecture listening, academic writing and/or presentation skills) are encouraged to apply.  All instructors are expected to teach our core classes and meet the minimum qualifications below.  All instructors will be expected to contribute to a growing and evolving program through the development and administration of new courses and programs.

Qualifications:
M.A. in TESOL, Applied Linguistics or related field with coursework in TESOL. At least two years of demonstrated excellence in teaching ESL in university settings. Demonstrated excellence in materials and curriculum  development.  Native-like fluency in English.  Experience using technology and the internet for instructional purposes.  Applicants with science and technology related or business education and employment backgrounds and teaching experience, especially with English language learners, are encouraged to apply.  EAP and expository writing experience is preferred but not required.  Preferred qualifications include language assessment expertise, experience or professional interest in teaching service learning courses, experience with project-based learning, experience working abroad, proficiency in a second language, and/or international program administration experience.

Compensation:
Starting salary commensurate with qualifications and experience within starting range of $39,228-$42,744 annually.  Excellent comprehensive benefits.  12-month position, renewable annually, with 24 days accruable vacation per year. Position Summary:  Responsible for overseeing all aspects of the ESL Programs which serve limited English speaking adults throughout Wayne County, including year round residents and seasonal farm workers.  Responsible for all day-to-day activities of ESL Programs, from intake of students to training of tutors, matching both, ongoing support, and reporting.  Must ensure all ESL Programs are running smoothly and have sufficient support, materials, and technical assistance to meet program objectives.

 

Duties:

  1. Supervise and support all other ESL Program personnel, both paid and volunteer.
  2. Provide and/or oversee case management and support for ESL students and tutors:  prepare profiles of new ESL students; match students with tutors appropriately and efficiently, including setting up classes; help tutors find tutoring locations; maintain regular contact with students and tutors through phone calls, visits, meetings, and events; provide instructional ideas to tutors; purchase relevant ESL instructional materials; collect progress reports and attendance records; occasionally fill-in for group instructors when needed.
  3. Recruit new ESL Students and new volunteer Tutors through a variety of methods.
  4. Ensure timely testing of all ESL students:  at intake and at least annually (BEST Plus, BEST Literacy, or TABE).
  5. Organize and/or conduct training for all new ESL tutors and provide additional learning opportunities for existing ESL tutors.
  6. Maintain student and tutor records:  ensure all proper forms are kept in paper files; ensure electronic database records are correct and up to date.
  7. Conduct and participate in activities to make students and tutors feel welcome and involved:  for example – tutor chats, student advisory committee, appreciation dinner, etc.
  8. Network and collaborate with other agencies: attend relevant meetings and staff development trainings; help set up partnerships; help prepare reports for partner agencies.
  9. Communicate program information: report program status, problems, and successes to the executive director through verbal and written reports; help prepare reports to the board and to donors; assist with grant writing; speak publicly and prepare written materials about the ESL program as appropriate.
  10. Participate in meetings, events and other activities that support the entire organization.
  11. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:        

The applicant must have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent education or experience and at least two years experience in adult education, English as a Second Language, or program administration.  Must be able to work with people from diverse backgrounds with varying levels of English ability.  Must be able to work constructively as a member of a team and professionally with volunteers.  Word processing, desktop publishing and database management skills a plus.  Bilingual ability (esp. Spanish, Creole, or Chinese) helpful, but not required.

The English Language Institute (ELI) at Pace University is accepting applications for the position of two (2) non-tenure full-time staff instructors.  These positions include a comprehensive benefits package.  The ELI provides intensive ESL instruction, intensive English for Academic Purposes, and university ESL support courses.

Responsibilities:
Teach full-time (up to 18 contact hours per week, 40 weeks per year with an additional 4 weeks of placement.)
Administrative duties (17 hours per week) including but not limited to:
Develop curriculum, course, and evaluation materials.
Provide leadership and mentoring to instructors.
Attend all faculty meetings, staff development and in-service training.
Advise and counsel students throughout the semester, including pre-registration and placement testing sessions.
Participate in placement testing 6 weeks throughout the year.
Conduct professional development workshops.

Cambridge University Press and Cambridge ESOL are leading a project, supported by the University of Cambridge, to develop a better understanding of the English language skills needed by students at universities where English is a medium of instruction.

Central to the project is the building of a very large collection of samples of language use (a corpus) from a wide range of students, native speakers, expert non-native speakers, and learner non-native speakers, in a range of typical academic contexts from 6th form through under/post graduate and post doctoral levels.

We are seeking someone to manage this collection.

As the Project Co-ordinator, you will be responsible for assisting in planning the collection, making contacts in various academic institutions with potential contributors, setting up arrangements to collect the data and also for processing of the data.  You would also be responsible for arranging and minuting meetings, writing progress reports and any other related administrative work.

The Research and Validation Group is recruiting a Principal Research and Validation Manager with research experience to carry out and coordinate a full range of research and validation activities related to Cambridge ESOL examinations.

You will take responsibility for conducting or supervising test analyses, setting or implementing research agendas and projects, preparing academic reports for presentation and publication. Although focusing on particular examinations from the outset, you will be expected in time to be involved in other research and validation work as required.

You will join a highly qualified and experienced team in the Research and Validation Group responsible for the validation of the full range of Cambridge ESOL examinations. You will have an MA in Applied Linguistics, TEFL/TESOL or a related field, and a strong background in L2 teaching and assessment.  A PhD with a focus on language testing, educational evaluation or education is strongly preferred. Experience of teaching and assessment within a K-12 context, of conducting impact or evaluation studies, of managing projects and staff with different working styles is highly desirable.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills dealing with colleagues at all levels both internally and externally is essential to this post. The ability to communicate effectively and work as part of a team is also essential as is analytic and problem solving skills. The role requires effective report writing skills, excellent presentation skills, and the ability to prioritize and time-manage projects.

The Cognitive Neuropsychology Lab within Georgetown University’s Center for Aphasia Research and Rehabilitation, directed by Rhonda Friedman, Ph.D., is seeking a full-time research assistant to support two ongoing studies examining the decline of word-finding abilities in adults with Mild Cognitive Impairment, Alzheimer’s disease, and Primary Progressive Aphasia. Research in our lab examines language and learning/memory function and dysfunction in people with stroke, head injury, and dementia. Projects include behavioral, fMRI, eye tracking, and ERP studies, and development of cognitive treatments for acquired language disorders.

Duties include: preparing stimulus materials according to research protocols; data organization, input, and maintenance; scoring language and neuropsychological assessment tests; coordination and scheduling of participants; recruitment and testing of normal control subjects; and data processing and analysis, including coding of subjects’ errors, as directed by senior lab members. The research assistant will also provide support to the Principle Investigator and other lab members, including ordering supplies and equipment, processing subject payments, maintenance and updating of the lab’s library, data back-up, and other minor duties as assigned. This position will involve working closely with the lab manager and other lab members for coordination of tasks, as well as a significant amount of independent work.  The successful research assistant will be self-initiated, motivated, and have the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Direct contact and testing of participants, and supervision of undergraduate students may be required at a later date. Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Linguistics, Cognitive Science, Neuroscience, or a related field; research experience; excellent oral and written communication skills; and a demonstrable interest in brain and language.
