The Department of Linguistics at The University of New Mexico offers the Joseph H. Greenberg Fellowship, endowed by a generous bequest from the late Selma Greenberg, to one entering Ph.D. student every year. The fellowship currently provides a stipend to an outstanding doctoral student for three and a half years. The department will provide a further half year of support through a full-time teaching assistantship. The fellowship and the teaching assistantship will also provide six to nine hours of graduate tuition each fall and spring semester, as well as graduate health insurance coverage.

All new applicants to the Ph.D. program in Linguistics at UNM will be considered; there is no separate fellowship application form. Applications to the Ph.D. program in Linguistics at UNM are welcomed from students with an MA degree in Linguistics or the equivalent. The department specializes in functional, cognitive and typological linguistics, Native American language documentation and revitalization (especially Navajo and other indigenous languages of the American Southwest), and signed language linguistics. Links to online application forms can be found at http://ling.unm.edu/graduate-programs/apply.html. Applications must be submitted by December 15th for consideration for the Greenberg Fellowship. For further information, please email lingasst@unm.edu or contact the Department of Linguistics at (+1) (505)-277-6353.

Three vacancies (2 PhD's & 1 post-doc) in the project ISLA: 'Idiomatic
Second Language Acquisition'.
See http://hstrik.ruhosting.nl/isla/

The ISLA project consists of four interrelated projects :
Post-doc A: Longitudinal acquisition of FEs by L2 learners
PhD A: Comprehension of FEs by L2 learners –
http://hstrik.ruhosting.nl/isla-vacancy-phd-a/
PhD B: Production of FEs by L2 learners –
http://hstrik.ruhosting.nl/isla-vacancy-phd-b/
Post-doc B: A computational model of FE processing –
http://hstrik.ruhosting.nl/isla-vacancy-post-doc-b/

In the ISLA project, we investigate how L2 learners acquire and use
formulaic expressions (FEs). Subjects receive focused teaching to learn
FEs and are tested experimentally to measure FE acquisition,
comprehension, and production. Questions addressed are: How does
specific training contribute to FE acquisition in L2? How do L2 learners
comprehend and produce FEs? How can we model FE processing by L2
learners? Can we exploit the theoretical insights based on novel
findings to improve L2 teaching methods?

Erasmus Mundus Program
"International Doctorate for Experimental Approaches to Language And
Brain" (IDEALAB). IDEALAB is a joint PhD organised by the Universities
of Potsdam (Germany), Groningen (Netherlands), Newcastle (UK), Trento
(Italy). This collaboration means that we can provide expert
supervision across a large range of subjects/areas and access to a
range of experimental methods.

We welcome applications from students with a Research Master's in a
relevant area to do research on any area of experimental or applied
linguistics and brain. Possible areas of research include acquired or
developmental language disorders, processing/acquisition and its
disorders or relations to the brain and experimental phonetics.

There are typically 8 or more studentships available a year for
students from the EU and other countries with funding from the EU
Erasmus Mundus Program. These provide generous living allowances;
waiver of all fees; and a generous travel allowance. All students have
to spend at least 6 months at at least two different European
partners.

Further details are given on the program website (http://em-idealab.com).

We are seeking applications from students who will complete an
appropriate Research Master's by August 2015. Completed applications
for September 2015 entry are due by 15th November 2014.

The Department of Linguistics at Stockholm University invites applications for a
four-year studentship within its Ph.D. programme in Linguistics with a
specialization in Sign Language, with start date January 1, 2015.

Vacancy notice for 2 PhD researchers (4 years – 100%) ACTo Academic Language Centre
Vrije Universiteit Brussel

ACTo is the Academic Language Centre of the VUB, and is devoted to the teaching of modern languages. It also organizes language tests and monitors revisions of academic texts. In order to advance understanding of both theoretical and practical considerations in the field of language learning and teaching, we are currently looking for two academic researchers in Applied Linguistics. The specific focus will be upon French and English in university contexts. The successful candidates will conduct 4 years of research, and will participate in national and international conferences and networks. The research topics should be aligned with one of the following project outlines:

I Research proposal 1

Implementing, evaluating and optimizing the use of language portfolios in L2 instruction

General objective

Innovation in language learning and teaching and enhancing pedagogy for autonomy through the use of L2 portfolios.

Description

This project aims to investigate the implementation and the effectiveness of the use of language portfolios in L2 instruction in tertiary education / in a university context. Established uses of L2 portfolios will be looked into and assessed from a learner perspective, with the aim of establishing best practices for L2 portfolio implementation.

Brief outline of the research

  1. 1)  Overview of the existing research into/on L2 portfolio use.

  2. 2)  Assessment of established cases of L2 portfolio use from both a learner and

    teacher perspective.

  3. 3)  Larger-scale implementation of an L2 portfolio in a language course, and

assessment of the effects of L2 portfolio use on learner outcomes and learner

motivation in a quasi-experimental design (experimental & control groups).

  4. 4)  Recommendations for best practices in L2 portfolio implementation.

II Research proposal 2

Development of a blended learning program for L2-for-specific-purposes courses.

General objective

A blended learning program, if implemented effectively, can promote learner autonomy, cater to individual learner differences and the need for flexibility, and provide language learners with more opportunities for interactivity and personal feedback.

Description

This project aims to develop and assess a blended learning model for ESP (English for Specific Purposes) and FSP (French for Specific Purposes) courses (or alternatively, a Dutch for Academic Purposes course).

CLIL in higher education: a case study of the civil engineering program at the VUB-ULB (Brussels, Belgium).

General objective

Enhancing foreign language proficiency and promoting internationalization through the implementation of CLIL (content and language integrated learning) in higher education.

Description

In order to implement CLIL in a university context, this project will look into the existing trilingual Dutch-French-English CLIL program for civil engineers at the VUB (a Dutch language university) and the ULB (a French language university) in order to assess its effectiveness, both in terms of learner outcomes and the foreign language proficiency attained. This will allow principles to be established for the implementation of CLIL in higher education more broadly.

Outline of the research

1) Overview of the existing CLIL research (at a tertiary level / in a university context).
